Early Years Places are a safe and welcoming place where families can enjoy spending time with their child, meeting other parents, relaxing and having fun.

Mahega, an educator from the Early Years Place at Mareeba said children are always learning through play at the service, often with mum or dad.

'We try to cater for the mums, dads and kids by giving them opportunities in all different areas,' Mahega said.

'We sing songs, read a book, sing the alphabet, do some counting, and try developing the children's fine motor skills with different sorts of crafts and sensory activities.'

One of the families that visits the service is mum Linda and her son Katai.

Linda said coming to an Early Years Place has helped her and Katai feel more comfortable after moving to Queensland from Ghana, West Africa.

'I was very lonely and emotionally down, but when I started here, I see a lot of parents, we talk, we discuss problems, how we are going, and it helps me a lot,' Linda said.

'It helps me for belonging, because I am here with no family, so emotionally I am healed by coming here.

'It has been good to my son as well, he can play with other kids and life is much better.

'We do a lot of activities, crafts, singing, reading and so many things.'
