A place to learn while playing

Many Early Years Places offer playgroups where children, mums, dads and carers can meet new people together and have fun learning through play.

Louisa enjoys attending the playgroup at the Early Years Place in Mt Isa with her 3 children, all under two years old.

'We all learn from each other, me and the other mums and dads,' Louisa said.

'In the mornings it's free time, everybody plays — there's an obstacle course over there and then there's toys over here, they're all just running around together, it's really good.

'After that we have song and dance which is when we all sing the Hokey Pokey, then story time.

'Then the educators cook food and the kids eat it and love it,' she said.

Mareeba mum Nikita said she has enjoyed watching her son grow and develop at the playgroup in their Early Years Place.

'His elder siblings are at school, so it's just me and him during the week and I find it a bit difficult to find kid activities at home,' Nikita said.

'I actually find it very enjoyable because he was very shy at the start, and since the last month I've been coming he's actually sitting down with the other kids and eating healthier food, then he gets up and has his play.'

Nikita said there are also other services she can access while her son enjoys the playgroup.

'I just signed up today for community support through housing and family support, and parenting programs that they have at the centre too,' she said.

'That's why I like coming here.'

Contact your local Early Years Place to learn about playgroup or find out more about the services they offer.
