Outside school hours care (OSHC) gives children—mostly school age—access to play and leisure-based educational programs. The programs are delivered before and after school, during school holidays and on pupil-free days.

For many working families, outside school hours care (OSHC) delivers important support as they know children are being provided with a safe and stimulating environment before and after school, and during school holidays.

This is what makes OSHC so appealing for Queensland families.

In this video, you'll see how the National Quality Standard (NQS) is raising the bar for services providing before and after school care.

You'll come away with a better understanding of what a quality service is so you can make informed decisions about the very best education and care for your child.

You'll know what questions to ask and what to look for.

OSHC services provide the opportunity for school-aged children to relax and play in a supervised environment, outside of school hours.

OSHC is delivered in a variety of locations including schools, youth centres, community centres and long day care services.

At an OSHC service, qualified educators deliver a nationally-approved program where children have access to a wide variety of stimulating, developmentally-appropriate activities, including indoor and outdoor opportunities.

Every service in Queensland is assessed and rated under the NQS. Services must display their ratings where visitors to the service can easily see it from the main entrance to the service. Services must display rating certificates issued by or on behalf of the Regulatory Authority including ACECQA. Documents created by the service do not meet the prescribed display requirements within the National Law.

You can ask your service to see their ratings or view it online.

The NQS sets a benchmark for quality education and care services by identifying 7 standards which are essential to delivering quality educational and developmental outcomes for children.
