To ensure our early childhood education and care (ECEC) services continue to safeguard the health, safety and security of children in their care, a National Model Code and guidelines (PDF, 166KB) have been introduced in relation to use of personal electronic devices. The recommended practices are:

  • staff only using service-issued devices when taking images or videos of children
  • staff only carrying or using personal electronic devices that can take images or videos for approved essential purposes while working directly with children
    • essential purposes include emergencies, personal health and support needs, family necessities and technology failures
  • ensuring strict controls are in place for taking, sharing and storing images and/or videos of children.

ECEC providers are encouraged to adopt the code to strengthen their services’ child-safe culture and to help prepare for any future regulatory requirements.

Read more on the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) website and download guidelines and communication support materials to help providers implement the National Model Code in collaboration with educators, staff, families and carers.
