National Disability Insurance Scheme

PublishingPageContent

The scheme provides Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life.

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

The NDIS helps people with disability to:

  • access mainstream services and supports
  • access community services and supports
  • maintain informal support arrangements
  • receive reasonable and necessary funded supports.

The scheme provides access to early intervention for children from birth to age 6 with developmental delay. It will not replace the supports provided by mainstream services including early childhood education and care services under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education (2005).

Children in receipt of a NDIS package will continue to be eligible for departmental inclusion programs available to approved kindergarten services.

It is beneficial for ECEC services to have an understanding of the NDIS and the different support available to children and their families. Watch the latest webinar on Introduction to the NDIS for ECEC services and their staff.
