Program overview
The Queensland Government is funding 6 sector organisations to deliver the Positive Behaviour Guidance Coaching Program (PBGCP) to regulated early childhood services.
The program providers will offer resources and specialist positive behaviour coaches to support:
- early childhood educators and teachers to understand the function of child behaviour and employ strategies to positively guide behaviour, positive interactions and learning in a way that upholds the rights and dignity of children
- approved providers to ensure their current interactions with children policy is reflective of better practice, which reflect quality improvement plans across Quality areas 1, 5 and 7 (where relevant).
Program focus
The goal of the program is to strengthen the professional skills of early childhood teachers and educators enabling them to recognise, understand and effectively respond to a broader spectrum of behaviours—whether developmental, complex, trauma-related or linked to diagnosable conditions.
This will result in education and care provided in a way that:
- encourages children to express themselves, their thoughts and ideas
- allows children to undertake experiences that develop self-reliance and self-esteem
- maintains the dignity and rights of each child
- positively encourages children towards appropriate communication and behaviour
- values the family, culture, age and physical and intellectual development and skills of each child
- ensures children and their families have opportunities to interact and develop respectful and positive relationships with each other and with educators, staff and volunteers.
Program design
The program coaches will guide early childhood teachers and educators through intensive face-to-face support and mentoring:
- with practical tools that promote positive interactions with children that are respectful, responsive, nurturing and secure
- to ensure children are guided in regulating their behaviour, responding appropriately and learning skills to resolve conflicts with their peers.
